About Meridian

After more than two decades of advancing solutions to some of the world’s most complex challenges, Meridian Institute has concluded its operations. This website serves as an archive of Meridian's impact.

Meridian Institute has closed its doors after 28 years of service

As a mission-driven, nonprofit organization, we helped our partners tackle complex challenges for nearly three decades.

In 1997, our five founding partners came together in Dillon, Colorado to form an organization that initially focused on conflicts related to land, air, and water. The name “Meridian” paid homage to the organization’s global reach, as well as our ability to create connections between people and issues.

Our roots in sustainability built the foundation for our work on issues related to climate, agriculture and food systems, health, oceans and freshwater, technology, and more.

During our tenure, we had offices in the mountains of Colorado and in Washington, DC. Our team was comprised of facilitators, strategists, project coordinators, operations personnel, and finance professionals who supported the organization and served as a fiscal sponsor to new initiatives. At the time of our closure, our staff members were located across the United States and in the United Kingdom, Singapore, Norway, and Portugal.

For nearly three decades, we solved problems and developed well-informed strategies to implement solutions. We brought parties with different backgrounds and perspectives to a place of understanding and agreement. We turned ideas into action by establishing partnerships, building coalitions, and incubating new organizations. Across issues, boundaries, and systems, our work was a catalyst for powerful change.

While the organization is no longer active, we’ve preserved this site to provide ongoing access to our case studies, publications, resources, and thought leadership content. Please note that this site is no longer being updated. The content reflects the state of Meridian’s work at the time of our closure in July 2025. This site will be available until July 2027. We invite you to explore the legacy of our efforts and the many partnerships that shaped our mission.

I have proudly been associated with Meridian and its founders for over 30 years. Having seen the good and the bad of American politics firsthand, I commend Meridian for staying above the fray, doing the hard work of forging practical, bipartisan solutions to the problems we face.

The Honorable William D. Ruckelshaus (1932 – 2019)

Former Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); Founding Chair of the Meridian Institute Board of Directors

About Our Closing

Facing a financial crisis due to the shrinking of our pipeline and the current funding environment for US non-profits, we made the difficult decision to begin winding down our operations in the spring of 2025.
